PENERANGAN BERKENAAN PENYESUAIAN SISTEM HANDICAP SETIAKAWANGOLF PADA 10 FEBRUARY 2010

" Since the introduction of the USGA Handicap Calculation formula, there have been a steady lowering of handicaps for the majority of us which on the whole seems to be a bit abnormal. So a small study was carried out. It was found that this was because we have been using our own Handicap Adjustment system. A briefing on the USGA and European Handicap Adjustment System was made after lunch on 10 Feb 2010 and it was unanimously agreed and approved by the president for adoption. It was also agreed that this system be utilised to recalculate all handicaps from the end of december 09. The date of implementation of the new handicaps will be notified. The new system has a few features such as dividing golfers into categories, introduction of buffer zones by category where an increase in handicap differentials within the buffer zones will not result handicap adjustment and the final feature is usage of the adjustment factor which varies by categories to calculate handicap adjustment up or down. The system is as shown:
Category Handicap Buffer Adjustment Factor
A

0 - 5 1 0.1

B

6 - 12 2 0.2

C

13 - 18 3 0.3

D

19 -24 4 0.4

For example a person was given a handicap of 14 at the start of january. At the end of january his handicap will be reviewed taking into account his performance during the month. The lowest three of the last ten scores is taken and averaged to determine his handicap differential. If his handicap differential is 17, there will be no change as he is within the buffer zone of category C. If his handicap differential is 18 which is out of the buffer zone of his category C, then the difference between his starting handicap and his handicap differential will be calculated. I.e. 18 minus 14 equals 4. The difference is then multiplied by the adjustment factor of his category which is 4 times 0.3. The total is 1.2. This is rounded to 1 and his handicap is increased by one to 15. That is his new handicap. Conversely, the same will happen if his handicap differential is below his handicap. Meaning his new handicap will be 13. A point to remember is that there are no buffer zones for handicap differentials that are lower then their original handicaps, meaning there will be a handicap recalculation using the adjustment factor for all those that play below their handicap. It may or may not result in a cut. In this case if he played one below his handicap, there will be no cut as 1 times 0.3 equals 0.3. Rounded to the nearest round figure gives it a zero. However if he was two under: two times 0.3 is 0.6, rounded to 1, so his handicap is cut to 13. The point to remember is that our handicaps are always shown rounded, but the reality is that there are always decimal points which is recorded in the computer."

  1. Hi Guys,
The part showing the adjustment system did not come out as I sent it, so it may be a bit confusing. It should read as follows:
Category A, Handicap 0 to 5, Buffer is 1 and adjustment factor is 0.1. Category B, H'cap 6 to 12, Buffer is 2 and adjustment factor is 0.2.
    Category C, H'cap 13 to 18, Buffer is 3 and adjustment factor is 0.3.
    Category D, H'cap 19 to 24, Buffer is 4 and adjustment factor is 0.4.

    Thanks
    Regards
    Amin

  2. Dato' Amin and Skawan Gang,

I must comliment Dato' Amin for working hard on the new skawan handicapping system which will definitely make many members very happy.

I could see many smiling faces at the weekly game at Kinrara GC to-day and they have reasons to give wide smiles. With earlier handicaps they were already scoring under or to their handicaps ( net 72) and now Dato' Amin and the computer bless them with 3 or more additional strokes!!! Nasib dan rezeki orang.....

I am happy with my old and the new handicap (14) though my RSGC official handicap is 15 and I know the computer is not friendly to me!

I would like to recall the earlier "unwritten rule" on members who play under their handicaps at the weekly games: their handicaps
must accordingly be reduced so that they would not run away with the pool money again the following week. I hope Dato Amin continues with this philosophy.

    Salam to ALL.
