CORETAN SETIAKAWAN INTERNATIONAL MASTERS – SURABAYA – 27-30 JULAI 2009

General

Setiakawan International Masters Surabaya.
Hari penerbangan masih jauh lagi. Kalau dulu PA akan semak penglibatan samaada official atau personal, sekarang ni kena semak sendiri. Diari entah kemana. Consistently filled or not. Jemputan kahwin tak putus putus. The decision is whether to go ahead with the Surabaya trip or not. It’s a toss up between having to attend a function here or forfeit it for Surabaya (and golf of course). Tough decision, sebab kalau dah tempah dan bayar tak boleh back out. Kalau terpaksa batal, wang tidak akan dipulangkan. Dan kalau dah decide to go dan sudah bayar kena berdoa pula. Jangan pula datang jemputan yang tak dapat dielak and of utmost importance jangan jatuh sakit. Tentang sakit ni pula, the Event Director, Saudara Raden Hamzah Massod – RHM, took the initiative to ask tabib kita Dr Khalil Ramli on measures to be taken to ensure that we don’t fall sick prior to going and once there, be healthy and fit throughout.. From RHM, quoting Dr Khalil - take 1000 mg of vitamin C daily(reminding members from our Setiakawan competition on the 8th Jul lagi dah diingatkan) , Insyaallah we should be alright. And sure enough except for a minor food poisoning complain Alhamdullilah we were healthy throughout.
At the LCCT lots of things happened – from reminding each other on whether one is already on the way atau tidak. Ini bukan main competition on our Wednesdays. The Event Director’s problem would not be on how to get you on the next flight, but who to replace you in the golf’s flight already scheduled for that day. Ada juga member tried to snatch a roti canai breakfast at the food court tapi kedai tu tak buka lagi. He had to be contented with a ‘Kopitiam’ kind of breakfast. Bagus nya kopitiam-kind of ordering is that you order and pay at the counter. You pay for your own. Kalau cara lama boss kena belanja (jaga standard lah). Boss kat meja kopitiam tu on that day was Dato Nawi. Dia boleh belanja I’m sure, tapi I supposed he needs every cents or in this case every rupiah to cover for the wager he was likely to face for 4 days of golf. I wasn’t sure whether he was relieved or slighted then.
After the initial checking in, immigration clearance, about 20 minutes of waiting we headed for our aircraft. An A320. There were 24 of us, 16 members and 8 wives. We took off at about 1030 am. An uneventful flight. Only forms to fill. Dato Hashim Yahaya (DHY) took the trouble to assist his 2 Indonesian rowmate in filling up their customs and immigration forms. I refer him as the ‘Petition Writer’. Patut dapat upah lah. He may want to relate this episode to us later.
On arrival, we quickly got our luggage including our precious golf sets. Golfers were planned to proceed to the Graha Famili and Country Club. The plan was for the golfers to proceed to the golf course whilst the spouses were supposed to be sent to the Ibis Rajawali Hotel to check in. Bas yang ada satu je. Bermakna ada grup yang kena tunggu. I am a bit blurred on what the problem was but some Sir Galahads decided to stay back to assist the wives. This must be a case of chauvinism atau takut kat B.I won’t speculate. But I think its more of concern for the wives that some decided to forego golf. And their presence were well proven as they were called on quite often to shoulder the tasks of handling things of which men are good at. – Tolong Angkat Beg. And more than that they helped in locating a reasonable makan place for the ladies. And this Datin Fatimah Huri, at the dinner on Day One complimented Dato Malek, Dato Amir, Dato Ali Karwi, Haji Jamaluddin Abdol Rahman and Encik Othman Karwi for their noble gestures. Yang jejaka lain yang tinggal bini tu buat dek je.Tapi malam kat bilik tak tau lah apa cerita nya. Seriously, no offence meant.

Day 1 at the Golf Course

The Event Director had to do a bit of juggling to accommodate and adjust the flights. The MAS flight members teed off first, and when we arrived we wasted no time to try out the Graha Famili and Country Club. I had the President, RHM and Dato Hashim Yahaya (DHY) in our flight. RHM partnered the President and I partnered DHY. The talk is as routinely done was the course was a bit tightlah, the greens are fast lah, too much water hazard lah, too many OB lines lah…The normal and expected grumblings of a golfer. They can never be satisfied, but what I noticed was that the course was well kept and well maintained. I actually enjoyed the surroundings. It was a still and dry day. Not much wind. And except for the bits of sandwiches and nasi lemak Pak Nasser we had in our aircraft we did not consume much. The flights were supplied with a ‘Cooler Box’, which is stocked with cold drinks of many types including ‘Aquas’ or mineral water. I did not realize that the cooler box was for our flights. I nampak caddy caddy minum semacam je. Ingat mereka bawa sendiri, rupanya mereka ambil dari cooler box. Itu kira golfers lah. At the end of the day we had to pay RH 80,000 for the drinks taken. About RM 30.00. Lessons Learnt? Know the systems in any one place before embarking on the golf game. At least this was Indonesia, bolehlah bertutur dan faham. Kalau tempat lain makin susah lah nampaknya. We started at about 1.00 pm local time. Dusk falls quite early. Jam 5.30 dah gelap, so towards the 17th and 18th hole tu, we were struggling to locate our balls. Tapi I think our President dapat bogey kat situ. I dapat triple bogey agak nya. At least this score you boleh blame cuaca gelap lah.

Real pressure in golf is playing for $10 when you've only got $5 in your pocket.

Dinner at Sri Nusantara Restaurant.

That night we had dinner at a nasi padang restaurant called Sri Nusantara. Actually that was lunch for the golfers. Kalau breakfast cum lunch, Brunch. Ni Lunch cum Dinner jadi Lunner.lah gak nya. It was a welcome moment as everybody was hungry. The scores did not help to soothe the nerves. We were really looking forward to it. On entering the restaurant, the ladies with the 5 Sir Galahads were already seated. Considering the ladies were also a bit flustered with the afternoon happenings, it was really noble of them to have waited for us. They could actually have ordered and proceed with their dinner but they did not. Ni sayang laki lah ni. We then ordered. Everything exotic were requested. I ingat orang Kelantan je suka kat otak ni, Rupanya orang Singapore pun makan juga. Minuman macam macam kita order. Aqua dah tak pandang. Juices sahaja termasuk estele, macam ABC lah tu. Lepas tu air durian belanda. Apa dia panggil I dah lupa. Selesai makan sessi bagi winnings for the day. Sabelum tu, the Event Director, RHM, memberi beberapa penerangan berkaitan SIM kali ni. But for sure I am not one of them. The President spoke and reiterated the requirement to be patient and tolerant and to enjoy the trip in Surabaya. The ladies were invited to say their piece. This was done by the President’s wife. Datin Fatimah Huri – orang Singapore tu. After the normal salutations she subsequently voiced out the hassle that they had to undergo. Lepas tulah dia bagi kata kata pujian kepada the 5 Sir Galahads tu. It is as if without them, the ladies would really confront problems all the way. Kiranya mereka tu hero lah that ‘saved the day’ Tersenggeh senggeh Dato Malek and gang. She also mentioned the organization they had established to ensure that their programme would proceed just as well as the golfers.
The damage was RH 2,442,000 for the 30 of us. That would be equal to RH 81,400 or RM 31.00 per head. A bit on the high side I thought.

Day 2 at the Golf Course
We moved off as per scheduled. It was an important day. It was the start of the championship. Kira hari First Round of SIM. We arrived early enough at the Finna Golf and Country Club. Dari Clubhouse I nampak satu course yang cantik. A lot of original vegetation especially the trees were preserved to give it a beautiful landscape. Banyak pokok kapok. The bags were dropped off and were subsequently brought to the buggies. Two golfers to a buggy and a caddy for each golfer. My flight comprised of Dato Nawi, Dato Amiruddin, Dato Khairuddin. Tak cukup caddy pulak. Yang caddy takde ialah untuk Dato Nawi. Risau jugak. Nanti dia ambil I punya pulak, but there were a few who arrived late. Once Dato Nawi got his caddy, we moved off to the 10th Tee Box.

Ready for Battle. Gambar diambil diFinna Golf Course sebelum memulakan pertandingan First Round.

Saya partner Dato Nawi and Dato Khairuddin dengan Dato Amiruddin. Kira kira ni evenly matched and boleh berentap.
Apabila kita tanya, dia kata mengikut gunung, kalau menghala kearah gunung uphill lah tu. Kita mendapati nasihat ini ada betulnya. Kita experiment lah beberapa kali. Memang betul.
Along the way through the course we met orang kampong jual stuffs like pisang.
a. Not to encourage the caddies and ball sellers of praying that we did not recover our balls, either genuinely or on purpose.
b. Bola ni akan dibersihkan semula. Untuk dapatkan an original glitter selalu nya dicuci dengan bahan pencuci saperti chlorox. Chlorox is corrosive.
Takut golf bag overweight nanti. So I beli 10 biji. Titleist balls tau. Ingat main lebih bagus, tapi lebih teruk. Sebenarnya bukan bola - orangnya yang tak cekap. We also bought bananas. I think a lot of us bought fruits from the orang kampong more to contribute to their income. My score was 53 and 53. Gross 106 and nett 84. Score macam ni susahlah nak menang SIM. Tapi tu First Round. Lucky tak de cut off. Kalau ada, I rasa I won’t make the cut. Dato Nawi, my partner had a nett 83, Dato Amir 76 and Dato Khairuddin 75. Kami kena bayarlah.
That was the First Round – and tomorrow is another day.

The most important shot in golf is the next one.

Lunner at Rumah Makan Sri
We proceeded for another Lunner at a restaurant known as Rumah Makan Sri. It was Sundanese fare. I notice lauk Sundanese kering so for kuah, we ordered soup buntut. There was ayam goring, nicely done and also pecal. There were lots of ulam and their sambal goes along well with the ulam. Sambal tu diletak atas batu leper macam batu giling. Nak ambil sambal tu kena kerok sikit lah. I nampak orang yang suka sambal tu kerok ketitisan sambal yang akhir. Everybody was happy and we went back contented, to rest and to face the battle for the next day.
The damage was RH 941,600 for 19 of us. Dengan tip the damage was RH 1,000,000. About RH 52,631 each. Equivalent to about RM 20 each.

Day 3 at the Golf Course

Another Battle looming. Bukit Darmo Golf Course

Second Day of the SIM. Orang macam I ni cuma nak tebus maruah je, to compensate for the high score the previous day. This time the game was at Bukit Darmo Golf and Country Club. Another nice and well kept golf course. Tak jauh sangat dari hotel. We were able to tee off at about 9.00 am.
This time my flight was a threesome.I had Col Razaki and one Encik Othman Karwi. Ini member baru. As I related that night at our dinner., Encik Othman ni dari Melaka, tinggi lampai. He was complaining about his right hand being hurt. Nampak lah plaster bertepek tepek kat jari. Bila nak tee off he took out a 3 wood (I think). I pakai driver Cleveland Launcher 10.5. Macam Vijay Singh pakai. Besar kepala club. Jadi buat diamlah dulu. Col Razaki teed off first. As per normal jauh pergi bola dia. I teed off next. A respectable distance, but still behind Razaki. Encik Othman kita ni teed off last. Bola dia lebih jauh daripada I punya. We had respectable bogeys there. Tapi rancangan nak offer dia 30,000. 15,000, 15,000 Rupiahs tak jadi lah. I senyap je sampai the last hole. Lucky, as hole by hole he outperformed me. He had net 75. Itu sakit tangan tu, kalau baik, macam mana pulak performance dia. Encik Othman is Dato Ali Karwi’s elder brother and the brother in law to Hj Jamaluddin. Patutlah. Kalau tengok Dato Ali tu halus je tapi pukul jauh, tak heran lah dia pun kukuh macam adik dia. Anyway Encik Othman, if you are reading this, Welcome to the Club. Hope to have you join us in our outings back in Malaysia.
In my case my score was 104, Nett 82. Baik sikit dari First Round. Tapi kalau nak jadi champion tu kena tunggu the next SIM. Kali ni bagi chan kat orang lain. Over 2 days ni overall + 21 nett memang won’t make the cut lah. Kalau gross, 210 atau +66. Ini memang kes teruk.

Lunch at Bumbu Desa Kedai
The restaurant was close enough to Bukit Darmo. The dish includes sop buntut and sop tulang, sambal mangga (yang ni popular), bakaka ayam (sedap, sehingga ada yang order satu lagi-kira dia) dan banyak sayur and ulam. Very satisfying.
The damage was RH 1,015,000. Campur tips RH 1,050,000. Equivalent to RH 55,263 or RM 21.00 per head. Still reasonable.
Prior to departing the restaurant, Dr Khalil informed me that he would be leaving for home, Malaysia and so won’t be joining us that night. He would be taking the taxi to the airport. I tanya kot kot dia berpeluang jadi champ SIM. Mengikut dia, not likely. Dengan Dr Khalil kita hanya perlu tahu nombor biliknya sahaja boleh lah dapat ‘doctor on call’ Anyway Dr Khalil - thanks for the ‘medical cover’ which you have been so kind for not submitting a medical bill to Setiakawan. Yang you nak jadi juara tu kena tunggu lain kali lah.

Dinner and Prize Giving Night of the SIM
Prior to 7.30 pm, all of us proceeded to the Mezzanine Floor for the event of the trip. Its our Dinner and Prize Giving for Setiakawan International Masters – Surabaya.
Semasa berkeliaran di Lobby, ternampak tangan President berdarah. Ini serious. Medical Cover kita dah pulang ketanah air. Tapi ingatan, tahap dia tampal plaster je as he did on our president and he can only dispense panadol . Lebih dari tu baik panggil doctor betul. Initially I thought of adding another credential to his name such as Dato Dr Hashim Yahaya, tapi considering the limited scope of responsibility that he has, the title Dr is thus deprived of him.At most, from Dr Khalil later, Medical Sergeant. Jaga stok ubat banyak banyak.

Dinner was held at the Mezzanine Floor. It was a buffet prepared by the hotel. Nothing exotic, but it was nice enough to conclude our stay in the hotel.

The ever smiling Puan Sri Nur Aini, Puan Marsuah and Puan Normah.

The President and his Merry Men.

After dinner, it was prize giving time.:

a. The Event Director, RHM, started off by thanking everybody for joining in the event and for making it an eventful occasion. He also thanked the president, deputy president and his committee for the assistance they extended to him. He extended his apology if there were oversights which may have occurred but were never intended.

The Event Director with his Openning Speech.

b. This was followed by the President giving his speech. He explained the background to the overseas trip and believed that such trips while being a holiday of sorts would also strengthen the bond between members of Setiakawan Golf and their spouses. He further exalted the wives for joining in the trip and who in the absence of their husbands being away on the golf course managed well. He further hoped that they would establish a network to further enhance Setiakawan’s silaratul rahim.

The President addressing members and their wives

c. Prize giving started off with winners of the day’s game. Datin Fatimah, wife of the president gave away prizes for the day’s medal winners, followed by Datin Rokiah, wife of Dato’ K who gave away prizes for special performance individuals.

The Setiakawan International Masters

The grand finale of the night was the prize giving of the Setiakawan International Masters. Acronymed SIM. As stated earlier, this was any Setiakawan Golf competition organized overseas. Tak kira berapa kali pergi overseas, it will be known as SIM. In recognition for its prominence as one of Setiakawan Golf’s golfing calendar, a trophy was sought. In this matter, a prominent personality was approached and he consented. That personality was none other than our Mr Cool – Tan Sri Hashim Meon. The trophy will be known as the Piala Tan Sri Hashim Meon. It will be brought along to anywhere we have our SIM and presented there. There is no set format on how the competition will be runned, but it will have to have the consent of the president and his committee. Since the trophy wasn’t ready and not available yet then, the winner this time round will only get it in Malaysia, once we are back.
The prizes for the Setiakawan International Masters were presented by Yang Berbahagia Puan Sri Nur Aini, the ever smiling lady of Tan Sri Hashim Meon. The results of SIM Surabaya were:

SCORES FOR SIM ON 28 AND 29 JUL 2009
Nett Scores Overall Nett Scores Positioning

Prizes in the form of cash were presented to:
a. Dato Abd Ghani Abdullah.
b. Dato Ali Karwi
c. Mohd Nazri Sulaiman.

Mohd Nazri Sulaiman, our Tour Coordinator turned out to be the champion and the first holder of Piala Tan Sri Hashim Meon. Ini macam Tiger Woods winning the FedEx Trophy. The first FedEx Trophy winner and the first Piala Tan Sri Hashim Meon. Congratulations to him.

Lepas tu, President Audit Board. Dato K was invited to present his audit report of the Tabung SIM. His members comprised of Dato Khalid Saad and Dato Hashim Yahaya Akaun tu, saya yang pegang, jadi the President felt should be audited. The audit was done at about 6.30 pm that day. The board through its president had written in red, announced the following - quote:

‘Having been presented to us the Surabaya Account (Tabung SIM) by Kol John Hamzah on 29 Jul 09 at 1845 hours, certified that we are of the opinion that the account is well kept by our Financial Controller and that the account was found to be in surplus. Therefore we recommend that each of the member would be refunded RH 100,000.The President of Setiakawan Golf is hereby requested to approve our recommendations.’

The President approved the Audit Board’s recommendation.
The Dy President were then invited to hand over the surplus rupiah. Sekurang kurang nya ada sikit lagi for shopping keesokan hari.
Before we adjourn for the night, the President was invited to present a token of appreciation. It was for the Event Director. The members appreciated what he has endured and underwent to organize such a trip and yet maintaining a hilarious and cool posture. With our thanks, the President handed him our token – a golf shirt emblazoned with the Bukit Darmo GC crest.
Selesai acara dinner dan pemberian hadiah. President jemput minum kopi.. I guess for now we let it sink in our mind and mull over the next venue. I’m sure, Insyaallah, this will be raised and discussed amongst members. Kalau ada venue lain that you like, you may want to suggest to the President, lepas tu sebut kat Dy President. Sabelum suggest tu make sure you have details especially the financial implications. If agreed the committee would subsequently start undertaking the project.

Day 4
This is supposed to be the day we will head for home, tapi flight untuk kebanyakan ahli was about 6.30 pm. Many hours to kill. Jadi adalah orang suggest satu round lagi. Actually this was planned very much earlier. Cuma golf course tak pasti. It was decided to play at Bukit Darmo Golf Course.

From Left: Dato Hashim Yahaya, Dato Khalid Saad, Dato Nawi Alias and RHM

This time it was organized by Dato Khalid Saad. 7 golfers ( 6 unaccompanied and 1 golfer whose wife granted permission) participated with the collection of RH 475,000 per golfer. Equivalent to RM 182.00. Quite steep tapi bawak balik rupiah banyak banyak buat apa. Baik bayar green fee, with buggy and a caddy for each golfer included.
My flight partner that day was Kol Mutalib and Kapt Yahaya. After the usual haggling over how many strokes sought and given, we proceeded. I dapat banyak stroke dari Mutalib and Yahaya. Balik kebuggy, bergerak kedepan, ambil club, pergi kebola dikanan. Tiga ke empat kali macam tu, pewai lah badan. I ikut nasihat tabib kita makan multi vite. I makan Centrum multimineral multivitamin formula dan juga Kordel’s C Time (vitamin c lah tu) tak putus putus sejak 25 Jul. Patutnya badan tegap lah tu, tapi tak juga. Mungkin kurang coverage sebab tak cukup seminggu. I had to give up at the sixth hole. In this matter, I do apologise to Mutalib and Yahaya for not able to complete the game. The wager was 50,000, 25,000, 25,000 rupiah. Patutnya I bayar lah, but being the gentlemen golfers they were they declined my offer to pay and I supposed kurang lah pendapatan mereka pada hari itu. Thank you Kawans.
My inability to complete confirmed 2 things:
a. Four continuous rounds of golf over 4 days was just too much, at least for my body.
b. Kita ni dah lanjut umur. Our (my) body could only take so much. John Daly had a 20 over gross as he was unfit and overweight.I macam dia lah agaknya.

I waited at the clubhouse whilst the rest completed their rounds. Hari ni cuma indivual play against each other. Once the game was over, there were some exchanges of rupiah and the normal promise of ‘return match’ in Malaysia. The winner for the day was Dato Hashim Yahaya - champion, Kol Mutalib– runners up or what we termed as deputy champion and – third placing Dato Nawi. Baru hari tu Mutalib was back in form sebab tugas dah selesai. Baru boleh dapat hadiah. I was informed that Dato Khairuddin has generously contributed a fair bit of his rupiahs to the pool for the winners. Macam ini lah Setiakawan. Lain kali taruk lagi.

Golf is 20 percent talent and 80 percent management.
~ Ben Hogan

Conclusion

To conclude, it was a very enjoyable and very enriching trip. We felt that it was worth the amount paid and that we now have a SIM Champion. Mohd Nazri Sulaiman would be the defending champion for the next SIM.
Though not highlighted, I would like to acknowledge a few personalities who in their own way had contributed to the smooth running of the SIM. They are:
a. The President and his charming lady who through their personality and disposition provides the support and backing to RHM to organize the trip very successfully.
b. Dato Nawi, the Dy President whose ideas and foresights started the ball rolling. Even whilst in Surabaya he had started, throwing ideas for the next SIM.
c. Tan Sri Hashim Meon. His presence and cool personality gave a lot of leeway to the Event Director to execute his plans without much hassle. Adviser lah katakan. We are aware that he was very supportive of the organizer. And of course his contribution of the Piala Tan Sri Hashim Meon.
d. Last but not least is our Mr Statistics, Kol Mutalib, who without fail was always with a pen and paper either setting flights or calculating scores. Its either in the coach , at the club or the hotel, he could be seen with his glasses perched on his nose scribbling away. I did not hear any complain of miscalculated scores. So, I guess he must be doing OK. Maybe due to his enormous responsibilities and his occupation with the tasks at hand, not much profanities were heard on the course. Kudos to you Friend.

Let us hope there’ll be more participants for the next SIM. I hope to post this on our Blog. Views, comments and observations are welcomed. I would also like additional input from other members and discussions if members feel like it.
This coretan should be a good start for our discourse.
Wassallam
